A five-year old boy from Targovishte, North-Eastern Bulgaria, has been hospitalized at the Clinic for Burn Trauma and Plastic Surgery in Varna after suffering an injury from ignited residual gas in a basement.

The boy's life is in danger, according to a report of the local police directorate.

The accident happened in the late evening of July 28 in the basement of a residential block of flats without a gas system.

The exact cause of the fire is still undetermined, but the police believe that the flames were ignited because of the build-up of marsh gas.

The child, who reportedly entered the basement with his grandfather, had been playing with a battery-powered yo-yo, which probably caused a spark.

Upon inspection, specialists from the local Civil Protection unit established gas levels 6 times above the norm.

The hazardous substance has been neutralized and the site has been rendered safe.

The boy was immediately taken to the emergency unit of the Multi-profile Hospital for Active Treatment in Targovishte

Due to the large percentage of burns, he was later moved to the Naval Hospital in Varna.

The police are still investigating the accident.
