Bulgarian EU Commissioner to Fight Kenyan Crisis
Bulgaria in EU | July 22, 2011, Friday // 11:37| viewsKristalina Georgieva, Bulgaria's EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid, Crisis Response and International Cooperation, launches Friday a two day visit to Kenya to tackle the country's humanitarian issues.
The EU aid chief will travel together with Polish deputy foreign minister Krzysztof Stanowski, the Polish Foreign Ministry has announced. Poland is currently holding the bloc's presidency.
"They will assess the situation in the Dadaab refugee camp in the east of the country near the border with Somalia," the ministry has said.
"The camp is currently home to four times more refugees than its infrastructure allows," it explains.
Georgieva has said that the EU plans to increase funding for aid agencies helping the over 11 million people needing help across the Horn of Africa, according to News24, but has pointed out that short-term emergency aid needs to be followed by programmes that ensure people can survive future droughts.
