Strong Storm Causes Wide-Spread Damage in NW Bulgaria

A storm with hurricane-like winds and hail has hit northwestern Bulgaria Wednesday evening, inflicting wide-spread damage and power outages.

The town of Knezha has been hit the worse with the wind toppling the roofs of two day care centers and damaging the roofs of the school, of the sports hall, and of the Town Hall.

The storm, which is the worst ever, according to local residents, had damaged many other buildings, including houses, as well as street pavement, and has been detrimental to the crops. Several 100-year-old trees have been uprooted.

10 250 households in the area remain without power.

The municipal crisis response team had begun work Wednesday evening and is continuing Thursday to deal with the removal of the damage and to list and describe it in order for those affected to get State assistance.
