Most Bulgarians prefer fiction to non-fiction as far as books are concerned, with soap operas becoming more popular than romance books, according to the Bulgarian Book Association's representative,

Young women in Bulgaria prefer reading magazines, Ivanka Vancheva, deputy chair of the association has told Darik radio. More and more women read crime fiction, which used to be typical for Bulgarian men, she pointed out.

Bulgaria's male readers, on the other hand, have a thing for non-fiction. Political science litertature is a typical "male" sphere of interest, the association's representative said.

Both men and women in Bulgaria have shown an increased interest in historical fiction over the last couple of years.

Vancheva has also described the increased interest on behalf of many Bulgarian readers to contemporary prose as a positive trend.

However, poetry is still not the Bulgarians' cup of tea.
