Bulgarian Ethnic Turkish Party Mulls Cabinet No-Confidence Vote

The Bulgarian ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms, DPS, is fully prepared to propose a no-confidence vote against the cabinet.

According to Lyutvi Mestan and Hristo Biserov, the two Deputy Chairs of DPS, who spoke Tuesday, the vote will be submitted on the grounds of failure of the internal security and public order policy, police brutality, violations of basic human rights, and delay in Bulgaria's joining of the Schengen zone.

Biserov further said consultations with other parties are to start as early as Wednesday, adding the best timing would be to submit the vote in the middle of next week, and debate it by end of it.

The DPS Deputy Chair pointed out that there is a large support for the vote among different political formations while the goal of the ethnic Turkish politicians is to topple the cabinet and have snap general elections.

"Our no-confidence vote is focused on internal security and public order, but it does not aim only at Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who deserves his own vote for sure - it is against the cabinet. Early elections are a must," Biserov stated.

When asked why DPS is giving up on a no-confidence vote on the grounds of the overall policies of the cabinet, the Deputy Chair admitted that "politics is the art of the possible."

Meanwhile, the other major opposition formation – the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, already voiced readiness to support a no-confidence vote on the grounds of failure of policies in particular sectors.

The right-wing Blue coalition also declared they would back a no-confidence vote over the failure in the security sector.

On June 17, the cabinet of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, and his ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party, expectedly survived a no-confidence vote on the grounds of failure in the anti-crisis policy.

124 Members of the Parliament voted in support of the cabinet – they were from GERB and independent MPs.

The Blue Coalition, the far-right, nationalist Ataka, and the conservative Order, Law and Justice party, RZS, did not take part in the vote.

BSP and DPS collected 70 votes.
