Bulgarian traffic police are facing a new challenge - metal spikes placed in potholes to dent the tyres of passing vehicles.

The tip-off was given by a Polish family, who complained to the traffic authorities after narrowly escaping a serious car crash, according to a report of private TV channel bTV.

The metal spikes were found in a pothole on Sofia's Ring Road, near the Obelya residential district, with traffic patrols confirming that they had cleared this section of the road of such objects before.

Last Saturday, a total of eight vehicles experienced such accidents.

The heavy rain in the evening caused the pothole to fill with water, hiding the sharp metal object from view.

The police were swamped with signals about accidents occurring at one and the same section of the road, the first tip-off given by a Polish family with two kids.

Suspicions first fell on some of the nearby roadside assistance companies and a tyre service center.

In the early 90s, metal spikes placed on roads were used by highway robbers.

However, police forces have said that the recent examples are a different story because the tyre is dented so as to deflate very quickly.

In their words, highway robbers need the tyre dented on the side, so that it loses pressure slowly.

The perpetrator of the offence remains unknown.
