Bulgaria's Construction Sector Collapses Further in May

Bulgaria's construction sector, the backbone of the country's economic boom in 2006-2008, is continuing its free fall, latest statistical data indicates.

According to the National Statistical Institute, in May 2011, Bulgaria's construction production index declined by 16.6% compared with May 2010 (which is a period when the construction sector had already collapsed substantially compared with 2008 and even 2009).

On annual base in May 2011, the decrease of production in construction, calculated from working day adjusted data was determined mainly from the drop by 19.9% in the civil engineering, while the building construction decreased by 8.0 %

On a monthly basis, in May 2011, Bulgaria's construction sector declined by only 0.1%, however.
