Socialist Leader: Borisov Cabinet Forces Bulgaria into Greece's Footsteps

Bulgarian ruling center-right party GERB has betrayed a vast majority of its pre-election promises made two years ago, according to Sergey Stanishev, leader of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP).

"Two years ago, GERB came to power, vowing that "Bulgaria Can". Bulgaria certainly "can", but GERB "cannot", Stanishev said Monday.

According to him, the governing party's biggest failure involves the pledge to turn Bulgaria into an average European country in three years.

At the same time, Bulgaria has backtracked on standard of living of the population, competitive power of the economy and unemployment rate and has placed insurmountable impediments to the business sector.

Stanishev likened GERB's rule to "a model of government of a security company" and used the opportunity to remind that foreign direct investment inflows to Bulgaria for the firat quarter of 2011 had turned negative for the first time.

Responding to Prime Minister Borisov's statement that his decision to form a minority cabinet had saved Bulgaria from a crisis like the one in Greece, Stanishev said that the country today stood much closer to a Greek scenario than two years ago.

"Allegations that GERB rescued the country from a Greek scenario can only appear in the mind of somebody who totally fails to grasp where Bulgaria used to stand and where it stands now", the left-wing leader stated, as quoted by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA).

To illustrate his point, he remarked that half of the fiscal reserve that GERB inherited had been depleted amid a rising state debt.

He also pointed out that BSP had withstood unprecedented pressure over the past two years, which it had not experienced even in the most difficult years of the transition.
