Bulgarians 2nd Most Numerous Foreign Visitors in Romania in May

Bulgarians were the second largest group of foreign visitors and tourists in Romania in May 2011, according to Romania's official statistics.

In May, Bulgarians were 17.6% of the foreigners who visited Romania, second only to Hungarians who made up 35.4%%, and followed by visitors from Germany (9.8%) and Italy (8.7%), according to data from the Romanian National Institute of Statistics, as cited by Romania Business Insider.

Arrivals of foreign visitors in Romania, registered at the checkpoints in May 2011 reached 614 700, a decrease of 2.9% year-on-year.

Visits by Romanians abroad, recorded at the checkpoints in May, 2011, were 940 800, up 6.2% compared with May last year.

Arrivals recorded in Romania's tourist accommodation venues in May, 2011, totaled 584,500, up 7.4% compared to May, 2010.

The past 3-4 years have seen an unprecedented boom in inter-country travel between Bulgaria and Romania, to the extent that the two Balkan nations launched joint police patrols of border areas and summer resorts. The number of Romanian tourists visiting Bulgaria each year has reached 1 million, and is expected to grow further.
