Eurostat: Bulgaria Boasts Cheapest Goods in EU

Bulgaria holds the first place in the EU in terms of cheapest consumer goods, and is next to the cheapest location on the continent, according to a Eurostat study released Tuesday.

Bulgaria heads the ranking for average price of goods at 51% of the EU average, with Denmark being the most expensive country at 143% and the UK sitting comfortably in the middle at 100%.

Other expensive countries include Luxembourg and Sweden (120%), Ireland (118%) Belgium and France (both 112%).

The next cheapest are Bulgaria's neighbor Romania at 59%, followed by Lithuania and Poland (both 63%).

Bulgaria also leads the ranking in each of the categories examined, namely Food and non-alcoholic beverages; Alcoholic beverages and tobacco; Clothing; Consumer electronics; Personal transport equipment; Restaurants and hotels.

Its values are close to those of the countries with the cheapest consumer goods examined in the study, non-EU members Serbia and Macedonia.

The most expensive countries are also non-EU members, namely Switzerland at 148% and Norway at 147% of EU average.

Alcohol and tobacco in Bulgaria are 64% of average Union prices, while food and non-alcoholic beverages are 66%.

According to Eurostat, restaurants and hotels in Bulgaria are a spectacular 45% of the average for the EU, beaten only by those in Albania and Macedonia at 42%.
