One of the two persons detained in a police operation that seized a sizeable arms cache in Bulgaria turned out to be a former employee of the Bulgarian Ministry of Justice.

Saturday Bulgarian police seized 7 army grenade throwers and a stack of ammo in an operation carried out in Plovdiv.

The weapons cache includes also 4 pistols and ammunition amounting close to 4000 cartridges of various calibers, some of them intended for use by special units.

The seven anti-tank army grenade throwers confiscated have not been produced in Bulgaria.

"I think this is an alarming quantity of illegally held weapons and hope that the prosecution and courts will react adequately to the situation," commented Bulgarian Minister of Interior Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

"Many crimes that could have been committed with those weapons have been prevented by the coordinated actions of the police," added he.

Minister Tsvetanov further said that investigations are under way on a larger network of illegal arms sale and possession.

It is suspected that the weapons might have been intended for further sale.
