Two new names have emerged as Bulgarian ruling centrist-right GERB's potential Presidential runners – prominent writer Stefan Tsanev and former Foreign Minister Solomon Passy.
Tsanev, known for his essays, plays,[1] poems, and historical novels, and Passy, the country's Foreign Minister during the rule of former Tsar Simeon Saxe-Coburg's National Movement for Stability and Prosperity government (2001-2004), have been mentioned in the Bulgarian Parliament as the ruling party's possible choices, according to the 24 chasa daily.
"This is the first time I hear that, nobody has held talks with me," Tsanev told the newspaper Friday regarding his possible Presidential nomination.
Passy pointed out he was not the only one fitting the Presidential runner profile described earlier the same day by a senior GERB official.
"Besides me, only a former Prime Minister or President would cover the criteria," he said jokingly. Passy is now President of his country's Atlantic Club.
On Friday, Interior Minister and head of GERB's election campaign, Tsvetan Tsvetanov revealed the party will endorse a man who is "popular enough" in Bulgaria and the EU.
GERB's presidential runner will not be among the current Ministers, and neither is he a member of the party, Tsvetanov also announced Friday, reiterating that GERB will reveal his name no earlier than September .
Prime Minister Boyko Borisov has said on several occasions he approves of the former Foreign Minister, the Bulgarian daily claims, citing its own sources.
