Bulgarian EU Commissioner Launches Humanitarian Corps

Bulgaria's EU Commissioner, Kristalina Georgieva, announced the launch of a new project for the establishment of an European Volunteer Humanitarian Assistance Corps.

The project includes the involvement of 100 young volunteers from the EU Member States , who will be trained to take part in rescue missions in disaster and post-war zones over the world, Georgieva, who is the Commissioner for for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, said Tuesday, cited by the Bulgarian news agency BTA.

Bulgaria, Germany and Austria are the first three countries where volunteers are to be selected.

The initiative is organized in cooperation with the International Red Cross.

The first candidates will be required to either have a Master's Degree in International Humanitarian Law or to have experience managing humanitarian projects.

The next three countries to join the project are the UK, the Netherlands, and Romania. Volunteers from these countries are to recruit followers.
