A Bulgarian woman, Ginka Stefanova, 23, has been sentenced Monday in Malta to 11 years of jail over illegal drug trafficking.

The young woman, who had admitted she attempted to smuggle 430 grams of cocaine and 330 grams of heroin, has also been fined EUR 23 000.

Stefanova was arrested at the end of September, 2009, at the Malta international airport after her behavior triggered the suspicion of the authorities. She had arrived on a flight from Brussels.

The search of her luggage did not reveal anything, but a medical exam at a local hospital showed the woman had swallowed capsules of the drugs, while another, larger capsule, had been hidden in her genitalia.

The drugs were 30% to 35% pure.

Stefanova told the police she entered an agreement several days prior to the arrest with two men – Lazar and James, to smuggle the drugs to Malta, against them covering her travel and accommodation expenses, and a pay of EUR 1 500. She had to deliver the drugs to an unidentified third person there.

The street price of the drugs is estimated at EUR 48 000.
