21-year old Alyssa Campanella, a California model and "history geek", has won the Miss USA crown and will represent her country at the Miss Universe contest in Sao Paolo, Brazil, on September 12.

Campanella was born and raised in New Jersey, which she represented at the Miss Teen USA beauty contest in 2007, according to international media reports.

In her words, she had moved to Los Angeles about 18 months ago, where she intended to stay untril her duties were over.

Campanella was crowned by Rima Fakih, Miss USA 2010, a Lebanese-born Muslim who was the first Arab-American to hold the title.

The other beauties that made it to the top four were Miss Tenesee, Miss Alabama and Miss Texas.

The new Miss USA is a natural blonde, who dyed her hair auburn several years ago for a part in a play and decided to stick with the "fiery" color.

After sharing her passion for history, the 21-year old Miss said she had a special interest in the Tudor and Stuart periods, citing Mary, Queen of Scots, who was beheaded in 1587, as her favorite monarch.

Campanella won after strutting across the stage and despite her unconvincing and elusive response to a question about legalizing marijuana.
