Sofia Water Utility Directly Punishes Debtors

200 households in Bulgarian capital Sofia will be left without running water after the Sofiyska Voda utility announced Monday it will stop supply due to accrued debts.

The households are located in the Lyulin, Nadezhda, Druzhba and Mladost neighborhoods, with the average value of their debt at BGN 2,500.

According to Sofiyska Voda, acquired 6 months ago by French water giant Veolia Environnement, the total of BGN 0.5 M owed by them is sufficient to construct 2 km of water supply pipes.

In February, Sofiyska Voda announced a stern campaign against consumers who fail to duly pay their water.

All the same, the company delivering water to the Bulgarian capital has steadily been criticized about water quality and occasional interruptions.
