Bulgaria's coastal town of Primorsko bade on Thursday farewell to Plamena Krasteva, the 20-year-old student, who was killed a day earlier in a horrific bus crash that claimed the lives of seven more people.

Locals say Plamena was an exceptionally beautiful and kind girl, who has been crowned Miss Primorsko three times. She used to rarely travel, but on the fatal night decided to head for her hometown to visit her family and departed from Sofia, where she was studying chemistry at a university.

Her mother, a long-time official at the town's municipality, was devastated by the news on Wednesday and refused to sign the document, which confirmed her daughter's death.

"The whole town is shocked," mayor Lilyana Dimova told reporters, barely holding back her tears.

"Plamena was such a young and beautiful child. It is very hard on all of us. I don't know what is going on, but people are truly terrified," the mayor said.

All the officials in the municipality have taken a day off as they found themselves unable to work.

Eight people were killed and 20 injured in Bulgaria early Wednesday morning when a bus crashed and burst into flames.

The bus crashed shortly after midnight on the Sofia-Burgas highway in Southern Bulgaria, near Plovdiv. Among the injured, two were in a coma, hospital sources in Plovdiv said.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
