The leadership of the opposition left-wing, Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, demands the immediate resignation of Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov.

At a meeting Tuesday, the Socialists asked Tsvetanov's ousting on the grounds of failing Bulgaria's Schengen zone membership.

Key figures in BSP say this would be the way to give European partners a clear indication the cabinet of the ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party, has a will for political change.

BSP leader and former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, stressed the delay in joining Schengen is not due to technical preparedness, but to lack of trust in Bulgaria in the EU, and his successor, Boyko Borisov, was to blame for constantly "patting Tsvetanov on the shoulder."

The BSP Member of the Parliament, Yuliyana Yotova, pointed out Tsvetanov is detrimental to Bulgaria and the route to Schengen goes through his resignation.
