Proshkov, endorsed by the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) party, overcame municipal councilman Vladimir Kisiov, a Sofia municipal councillor and candidate of the Union for Democratic Forces (UDF), the other party in the coalition.

Final results show 12,925 votes (60%) for Proshkov, against 8697 for Kisiov (40%).

The Blue Coalition is a member of the European People's Party and initially supported the ruling centrist right GERB party which took over in the 2009 elections in Bulgaria, but subsequently moved into opposition.
