Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova will run again for the position in the fall elections as the candidate of ruling the Bulgarian party, center-right GERB ("Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria").

This news has been confirmed by the Sofia Municipality, according to daily Standart.

If true, that gives end to speculations about Fandakova's possible taking part in GERB's presidential tandem for elections for Bulgaria's President, again set for this fall.

Thus far, the main candidates for the position of Sofia Mayor apart from GERB's Fandakova are Georgi Kadiev from the main opposition Bulgarian Socialist Party and Proshko Proshkov, elected on preliminaries in rightist Blue Coalition Sunday.

Fandakova has been Sofia's Mayor since pre-term elections in the fall of 2009, after then-incument Sofia Mayor and GERB leader Boyko Borisov went to become Bulgaria's PM when GERB swept general elections in July 2009.

Fandakova, who has a background as a school headmaster and teacher of Russian, served some months as PM Borisov's Minister of Education before being elected mayor.

2005-9 Fandakova was Borisov's vice-mayor, responsible for culture, education and sports.

In other news, sources claim the candidate of the liberal National Movement for Stability and Prosperity, which was a part of the previous coalition cabinet, but currently is not represented in Parliament, will be either current Sofia Municipal Councillor Vladimir Karolev or former Minister of Education and vice-PM Daniel Valchev.
