Spanish-German Engineer Mysteriously Battered in Bulgaria

Spanish engineer of German citizenship Alejandro Perez Winkler working in southern Bulgarian town of Smolyan has been assaulted and severely beaten by unknown persons.

The incident happened Thursday evening, but local police authorities disclosed it only Monday, according to them, so as not to interfere with ongoing investigations.

Perez Winkler was assaulted in front of his residence in Smolyan by two masked persons who beat him with bats.

He was hospitalized with a broken skull and many other injuries as a result of the battery. The assaulters made no intention to rob him.

The Spanish engineer supervises the reconstruction of the water supply and sewage system of Smolyan.

Police are investigating possible motives and suspects behind the assault. Alejandro Perez Winkler has been living in Smolyan for 2 years now and was not known to be in conflicts or other interpersonal problems.
