An initiative committee of 53 people has officially backed the presidential bid of Bulgaria's ex EU Commissioner Meglena Kuneva for the elections in the fall of 2011.

The committee features a wide range of prominent Bulgarians, including sculptor Georgi Chapkanov, former Deputy Prime Minister in the Stanishev Cabinet Daniel Valchev, film director Iglika Trifonova, actresses Yoana Bukovska and Meglena Karalambova, singers Doni, Kotseto-Kalki, Mariana Popova, former NSMP MP Mincho Spasov, former Minister in 2001-2009 Nikolay Vasilev, etc.

Monday's official presentation of Kuneva as a presidential candidate was attended by former Bulgarian Tsar and former Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg, founder of the National Movement for Stability and Prosperity (NMSP) party.

Meglena Kuneva, Bulgaria's ex EU Commissioner, was in charge of consumer protection during the first Barroso Commission. Before that, she was a Member of Parliament in the 39th National Assembly, in June 2001, and was appointed Deputy Minister and Bulgaria's Chief Negotiator with the EU at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in August 2001.

Kuneva has claimed she will not seek formal backing from political parties, even though she technically enjoys the support of her own party NSMP and other parties also considered favorably inclined towards her.
