Majority of Bulgarians Favor 2nd Nuclear Plant

The majority of Bulgarians, 64%, are of the opinion the country's second Nuclear Power Plant in the Danube town of Belene must be build and as fast as possible.

The results come from a survey, conducted by the Afis Agency, between May 3 and May 8, among 1 010 Bulgarians, over the age of 18, from Sofia, regional centers, towns and villages.

43% of those polled say the serious incident with earthquake-stricken Japanese Fukushima NPP had no influence on their opinion on Belene; 37% answered they have more doubts now while 11% responded it reaffirmed their previous opinion.

72% support the idea to hold a referendum on the project with 50% the right-wing voters saying yes on the NPP in a possible referendum. 69% of the supporters of the ruling, center-right Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party are for the project, compared to 56% of those of the far-right, nationalist Ataka.

When asked what type of information would influence positively or negatively their opinion on Belene, 80% of the respondents mark prices of electric power upon its launch while 68% point out its safety mechanisms, compared to those at Fukushima.
