Bulgarian Beach Police: Foreign Tourists Complain of Fake Crimes

The Bulgarian beach resorts often become targets of foreigners who file fake crime reports, according to the police.

Foreign tourists often claim fake crimes under the influence of alcohol while others lie on purpose in order to file insurance claims upon returning home, according to Bulgarian police.

The information was reported by the Bulgarian daily 24 Chassa (24 Hours), citing The Head of the Police Precinct in the coastal town of Nessebar, saying there are a number of such incidents every summer.

As a first for this season, a British tourist, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, has deluded police in Bulgaria's largest summer resort "Sunny Beach" by claiming he had been abducted and robbed.

The man filed the claim on June 2, saying the night before, after a couple of drinks, he walked to his hotel. A taxi cab driver forced him in the car where, with the help of an accomplice, they robbed the tourist, taking his cell phone and photo camera and later throwing him out on a remote road.

After a quick check and several interrogations, the police became aware the man was lying.

The staff of the hotel restaurant where the Brit had been drinking told them the latter returned several times on that same night, complaining he was robbed. Each time the bartender pointed to him where he had left his bag, but he refused to take it. The same scenario was played on the hour until the morning. The tapes from the hotel security camera have confirmed the accounts of the witnesses.

Around 6:30 am, the tourist, identified as John S.,59, came for the last time and finally took his bag because he needed money for a cab ride. He then returned to his hotel and told his wife he had lost his cell phone.

After a long sleep and having sobered up, the man went to the police, who say they are convinced he had lied to them.
