Fighters allied to Al Qaeda are reported to have taken over the southern Yemeni port town of Zinjibar Sunday, causing the deaths of at least 26 civilians in the fighting.

According to reports, a heavy fighting has been taking place between the Yemeni army and the Al Qaeda militants, during which civilians have been affected.

Other sources dismiss the information as rumors spread by embattled Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh in efforts to dismiss a popular rebellion against his decade-long regime.

Meanwhile, Yemen's capital Sana'a has returned to peace after a deal between Saleh and the most influential tribal leader in the country, the sheikh Sadeq al Ahmar, to lay down arms for the safety of the people.

More than 120 persons have been reported killed since the anti-government protests started in Yemen earlier this spring.
