Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb war criminal arrested in Serbia appeared in a Belgrade court late on Thursday.

Within seven days the man who was for 16 years among the world's most wanted will appear before the War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague. The court now has to decide whether all conditions for his extradition are in place.

Mladic's lawyer, Milos Saljic, told the judges that Mladic does not recognize the international tribunal and that he is physically and mentally unable to undergo the investigation, according to the Voice of America.

Ratko Mladic is the former Chief of Staff of the Army of the Republika Srpska (the Bosnian Serb Army) during the Bosnian War 1992–1995 and is now considered a fugitive from the ICTY who has been accused by the prosecutor of the ICTY of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes.

Serbia's failure to capture Mladic had been one of the main obstacles the country has faced trying to establish closer ties with EU.
