EC Probes Dutch Intention to Kick Out Bulgarian Laborers

The European Commission is looking into the Netherlands' intention to introduce special conditions for Bulgarian and Romanian workers on its labor market.

There is a serious risk that the Dutch decision might harm the freedom of movement, one of EU's fundamental freedoms, Laszlo Andor, European Commissioner responsible for employment, social affairs and inclusion, told the Bulgarian Dnevnik daily Wednesday.

Therefore, it is Andor's priority to deal with the case. European Commission experts will look into it and based on their findings, Brussels will consider its further actions.

Bulgarian and Romanian workers will be no longer welcome to the Dutch labor market should a proposal by Social Affairs Minister Henk Kamp be approved.

Starting July 1 2011, Bulgarians and Romanians as well as foreigners from outside the EU will only be granted a work permit in the Netherlands under "exceptional cases," as the Dutch parliament will reportedly back Kemp's proposal.
