Nearly 100 Dead as Tornadoes Rip Through US Midwest

At least 89 people have been reported dead in Joplin, Missouri, as devastating storms ripped across several  US Midwestern states on Sunday.

Local authorities have  warned that the death toll could climb Monday as search and rescuers continued their work at sunrise

In the aftermath of the fierce tornado, which according to estimates damaged 25 to 30% of Joplin, a state of emergency was declared in Missouri on Sunday evening.

"Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to the families of all those who lost their lives in the tornadoes and severe weather that struck Joplin, Missouri as well as communities across the Midwest today. We commend the heroic efforts by those who have responded and who are working to help their friends and neighbors at this very difficult time," US President Barack Obama said in a statement late Sunday night.

Joplin, Missouri is populated by approximately about 50,000 people and is located 257 km (160 miles) south of Kansas City.
