Bulgaria's Naval Academy in Varna Turns 130

The Bulgarian Naval Academy in Varna celebrated Friday its 130th birthday amidst much praise for its contribution for both the military and the society.

"Since its founding in 1881, the Naval academy is not just one of the most prestigious higher schools in Bulgaria – it is a school for leaders," Bulgarian Defense Minister Anyu Angelov said at the celebrations, while pointing out the university's role for the civilian shipping, research, and maritime industries.

Captain Boyan Mednikarov was appointed Friday as the new head of the Naval Academy "N. Y. Vaptsarov"; the current head, Commodore Dimitar Angelov is the new head of the Sofia Military Academy "G. S. Rakovski", the first naval officer to assume the post.

Minister Angelov declared all-out support on part of the Ministry of Defense for the development of the Varna Naval Academy.

He denied allegations that the government was preparing secretly to privatize the Varna naval repair and military plant – TEREM - Flotski Arsenal.

The Defense Minister also said the Bulgarian frigate Drazki will complete its mission of patrolling off the Libyan coast within the NATO United Protector operation on May 31, and will head home to the Bulgarian port of Burgas.
