Bulgarian MP May Face Jail Time for DUI

Dimitar Gorov from the leftist Bulgarian Socialist Party may end up stripped of his MP immunity, as he was caught driving under the influence in the early hours of December 31 2010.

It was the country's Chief Prosecutor, Boris Velchev, who demanded the measure against the MP.

As Gorov's blood alcohol content of 1.76 permilles, he faces up to one year behind bars, as does everyone caught driving with more than 1.2 permilles under the Bulgarian legislation.

"I made a mistake and I am sorry. I do understand I have a responsibility as an MP. I have learned my lesson and I will never do it again," the MP declared before the Trud daily.
