Bulgaria's Supreme Court of Cassation will issue a ruling within one month on the 20-year prison sentence of Australian Jock Palfreeman for the murder of Andrei Monov.

The Supreme Court of Cassation, the highest court in Bulgaria that can hear the case, held a regularly scheduled sitting Monday, with Palfreeman's defense pleading that the case must be returned to the Appellate Court for a new investigation, while the Supreme Prosecutor's Office of Cassation demanded a life imprisonment for the Australian.

The major result of Monday's sitting was that the Court confirmed that it will issue a final ruling within one month.

Australian Paul "Jock" Palfreeman lodged in March 2011 an appeal to the Bulgarian Supreme Court of Cassation against his 20 years prison sentence for the brutal murder of 20 year-old Andrei Monov in 2007.

The Bulgarian Supreme Court of Cassation is the 24-year old Palfreeman's final avenue for appeal.

In the early hours of December 28, 2007, Palfreeman fatally stabbed the Bulgarian law student in downtown Sofia and injured his 19 year-old friend Antoan Zahariev. On December 2, 2009, the Australian national was convicted to twenty years in jail.

The Australian has claimed that he intervened only to go to the aid of two Roma gypsies being beaten by the group of boys, including Andrei.
