Bulgaria is a staunch ally of NATO and the US, an allegiance give her much more than financial benefit, stated Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov Saturday.

He was reacting by a scandal provoked Friday by Volen Siderov, leader of the nationalist Ataka party - an ally to the governing center-right GERB - who confronted US ambassador to Sofia to claim that the States owe Bulgaria USD 2 B for using military bases.

According to Siderov, Warlick reacted by throwing the documents he was presented aside, and then going on to threaten Siderov that he is going to "destroy" him.

The nationalist claimed he feared for his life as a result and demanded life guards from the National Security Service for his safety.

"This is a fake scandal," commented President Parvanov Saturday. "NATO is a security pact and security is not something you can buy."

The Bulgarian President further slammed Siderov's behavior, which according to him has managed to sour relations with some of Bulgaria's neighbors, and now its directed at the country's strategic allies.

"We are great allies with the USA and we're profiting from that - not only economically," concluded Parvanov.
