Good Job, Polly!

I personally would rather have a meditative pint of beer rather than sit through three hours of torture watching singers going to great lengths to be "original" and an audience pretending to be entertained.

Sloppy or dire – this is what the Eurovision experience is generally considered to be across Europe. In Bulgaria too.

But the energy of Bulgaria's young, short-haired Polly Genova made me think the music jamboree still matters. At least for countries, which still struggle with the lack of European self-confidence.

True, Polly failed to win through Thursday's qualifying stage. But it was not because this year's offering failed to capture the spirit of 2007, when Elitsa and Stundzhi made it to spot number five.

This year, Bulgaria plumped for a slice of pop-rock. It was exactly because of deciding to plough the usual pop-rock furrow, combined with a rather retro image, that Polly failed to recapture the country's Eurovision glory days.

Next time Bulgaria will have to keep the high professionalism and invest its hopes in a very different style. Why not Azis?
