Former Bulgarian Olympic boxing competitor, Nayden Stanchev, has been killed in Sofia's "Krasna Polyana" district Wednesday evening

The information was reported by the police Thursday.

Stanchev had been stabbed to death around 5 pm. He was in the company of friends at the time and they had all been drinking alcohol all day long, beginning before noon. The witnesses had been so intoxicated, they could not offer any details Wednesday evening.

The police further informed Thursday they have detained the alleged murderer, a man, 51, who had made full confessions.

The motive is said to have been an altercation between the two after hours of heavy drinking.

The detainee was living in the same neighborhood where the murder took place and had known Stanchev for long years. He does not have a criminal record.

Police continue to search for eyewitnesses.

It was initially reported the killer had been a tall, blond young man, around the age of 20.

Police say they have established the presence of a man with the same description in the area at the time of the murder and appeal to him to come forward.

Stanchev, 62, competed in the 1972 Olympics.
