Bulgaria Backs EU for Continuing WTO Talks on Doha Development Agenda

Bulgaria's government has declared support for the EU position in favor of continuing talks on the Doha Development Agenda within the World Trade Organization.

The Cabinet approved Wednesday the Bulgarian position for the upcoming EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on trade scheduled for May 13 in Brussels.

The EU member states' ministers will discuss the results of the negotiations within the Doha Development Agenda, the current trade-negotiation round of the World Trade Organization (WTO), which is supposed to lower trade barriers around the world. The Doha round started in 2001 but disputes have led it to stall since 2008.

In addition to backing the EU position, Bulgaria believes that the WTO reports reflect relatively correctly both the results of Doha Round talks to date, and the issues of contention.

The EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting's agenda further includes the presentation of regulations for the application of the Generalized System of Preferences and for bilateral investment agreements between the EU and third states.

An informal discussion about the current situation of the talks for a free trade agreement between the EU and India is also on the agenda, as is the EU offer for trading services within the proposed EU-Canada free trade agreement. The EU foreign minister will also discuss the preparations for the upcoming EU-Japan Summit.
