The Members of the European Parliament are discussing Tuesday with the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, temporary reinstatement of border control in the Schengen zone.

The temporary plan will be effective for countries which fail to fulfill the obligation to secure their part of the European Union's outside border, and in cases of unexpected and large migration influx.

The migration wave and its possible outcomes for Schengen are a great source of alarm for the Members of the EP. The members of the Committee for Civil Liberties cast suspicion regarding the announcement EC is mulling the creation of a mechanism granting opportunity for temporarily reinstatement of the internal EU border control under certain conditions. The announcement was made on May 4, after a meeting of the EC with representatives of the French and Italian governments.

MEPs are insisting Schengen agreements must not be weakened and all cases of internal border control must have solid grounds, pointing out the decision to introduce such control must be made on EC level, not on national one, as it is happening now – a position backed by EC.

In addition to temporary reinstatement of Schengen border control, the May 4 plan includes the outlining of clearer goals for legal migration; dissemination of good practices of integration of legal immigrants; finishing the common European system for the right of refuge, and the adoption of a strategic way to deal with third countries in the area of migration.
