Average Bulgarian Works Slightly over 7 Hours Daily - Poll

The average Bulgarian spends the most time on personal matters (33%), followed by work (19%), education (15%), leisure (12%), household chores (10%), travel and volunteering.

The data was published Monday by the National Statistics Institute, NSI, and is based on the Census conducted in Bulgaria in February 2011. The poll includes 5 503 people from 3 132 households.

The average Bulgarian works 7 hours and 19 minutes a day (7 h. and 25 m. for men and 7 h, and 13 m. for women). Those between the ages of 20 and 49 work the longest hours – 7 h and 39 m, while those over 65 work 4 h. and 36 m., which is the lowest. In comparison, in 2001 – 2002, the average Bulgarian worked 7 h. and 51 m. a day.

Personal activities take on average 12 h. and 20 m. a day and are divided as follows: 9 h. and 14 m. for sleep; 2 h. and 8 m. for eating, and 58 minutes for bathing, dressing, care of personal health and others.

Those over 65 and those under 19 sleep the longest – 10 h. and 14 m. and 9 h. and 33 m. a day, respectively.

Household chores take an average of 3 h. and 25 m. a day, down by 28 m., compared to 2001 - 2002. Nearly 80% of all women spent 50 m. a day washing dishes compared to 32 m. for the men. Women spend twice longer than men on household chores - 4 h. and 27 m. and 2 h. and 14 m., respectively.

98% of all polled slate time during the day to watch TV, read, take walks, play sports and games or use their computer for personal needs. Leisure time is 4 h. and 25 m. on average with people between 10 and 19 years of age and those over 65 having the most free time – 6 h. and 5 h. and 15 m., respectively.

Bulgarians use their leisure time mostly to watch TV - 2h. and 43 m. a day, and talk to family, friends and relatives – 36 m. a day.

The time spent on personal computers is up significantly, compared to 2001 – 2002 – 12% of those polled have spent an average of 1 h. and 37 m. using their computer.

Those who play sports do it for 2 h. each day; 1 h. and 33 m. are spent on tourism, entertainment, and going to the cinema, theater, concerts; 1 h. and 30 m. are used for hobbies; 1 h. and 20 m. for reading books and 50 m. for reading periodicals.

Bulgarians travel to work 1 h. and 5 m. a day on average while students spent 1 h. and 7 m. traveling to school; trips related to household chores take 56 m. a day, while those related to free time - 53 m.

The division of time is highly influenced by an individual's age and way of life – alone or in a family, with children or without children.
