Egypt Army Vows to Defend All Citizens as Religious Violence Erupts

The Egyptian Army stated that it will not let any group of society impose upon others, after inter-religious clashes overnight caused the deaths of 9 persons.

Groups of Muslims attacked a Coptic Christian church in Cairo, claiming a woman was forcibly held there because of intending to adopt Islam.

In the ensuing violence, 9 persons were killed. According to authorities, sixs of them are Muslims, and three Christians.

Some 150 more people were reported wounded. The building of the church was set on fire and significantly damaged.

The Egyptian Army, which effectively controls the country, has vowed to step in to prevent any future like occurences.

Egypt's acting PM Essam Sharaf called an emergency meeting of the cabinet Sunday to discuss the situation, cancelling his scheduled visit to Bahrain and the UAE.
