The driver, who caused the death of six young people in Bulgaria's Simeonovgrad on the eve of Easter, is slowly regaining consciousness, doctors say.

23-year-old Daniel Georgiev crashed his car into a group of young people late Saturday night, killing 6 teenagers and wounding 2. He himself is in hospital in critical condition. The tragedy shocked Bulgaria on Easter. The victims themselves were walking out of a home to go to church for the midnight Easter service.

Georgiev is known to have exceeded the speed limit but test results made on Sunday night showed that he had a blood alcohol content of 1.3 permilles.

If he survives, Georgiev will face a charge of causing death by drink-driving facing from 5 to 15 years in jail.
