The Union of Democratic Forces, one of the two parties forming Bulgaria's rightist Blue Coalition, named Tuesday their vice-chair Rumen Hristov as their presidential candidate for elections in the fall.
Hristov will be proposed as joint candidate to the other Blue partner, Democrats for Strong Bulgaria, and if the Democrats do not agree and prefer their own figure, the joint candidature will be chosen in a preliminary election on May 15.
Rumen Hristov was chosen by a secret vote at a sitting of the UDF National Council, and won with twice the number of votes cast against the other possible nominee, MEP and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Nadezhda Neynsky, erstwhile Mihaylova.
Hristov, an economist by education, is a former Minister and vice-Minister of Agriculture, as well as advisor to Bulgaria's Presidents Zhelyu Zhelev and Petar Stoyanov.
Sources from Democrats for Strong Bulgaria are saying their preferred candidate is political scientist and MEP Svetoslav Malinov.
