Former Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak, who was recently detained ahead of an investigation into corruption and abuse allegations. may face a death sentence.

Mubarak may be executed if there is enough evidence that he has caused the death of protesters on purpose, according to the governmental Al-Ahram daily, citing Zakaria Shalash, chair of the Cairo's Court of Appeal.

Shalash announced that former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly who himself is persecuted on charges of ordering the shootings of anti-regime protesters, has testified that Mubarak has ordered him to do so.

"If proven, he (Mubarak) will receive the same punishment as the person who carried it out and it could reach execution if it is proven that peaceful demonstrators were killed with premeditation," he said.

If premeditation is not proven, Mubarak may still face a life sentence.

Mubarak and his two sons, Alaa and Gamal, were detained for 15 days on Wednesday, as ordered by the Egyptian prosecutor general.
