Bulgaria's joining of the Schengen zone is one of the difficulties faced by the Hungarian Presidency of the European Union, according to Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban.

Orban, cited by the Bulgarian National Radio, spoke Thursday, during a press conference in Brussels, explaining the hurdle came from lack of political support for the country's Schengen entry.

"Romania is technically ready for Schengen, while Bulgaria will be by the beginning of May, but both don't have any political support among other EU Member States. For this reason, the two countries do not have the position of strong members of the Union, which is of importance," the Hungarian PM is quoted saying.

Orban pointed out political reservations will remain, thus the need of a large political debate instead of talks on the subject held "behind the curtain."

When asked what he expects to be done by the end of the Hungarian Presidency, the PM replied Hungary is applying all effort to keep the discussion alive.

"We will continue to show we are flexible; to show the two countries are ready for Schengen," Orban stated.
