Meglena Kuneva, Bulgaria's former and first EU Commissioner declared Thursday her decision to run for president in the fall is pending, but she would never be the candidate of any political party.
Kuneva firmly rejected reports she has been meeting with leaders of political formations in an attempt to secure their support.
The ex Commissioner explained the top issue for her, until now, has been Bulgaria's joining of the EU, while her current desire is for Bulgarians to know clearly what to expect from each institution in the country.
"We must find out what is it that we want for the next 10-15 years. We cannot continue to have this narrow horizon. European ideas are not discussed enough in Bulgaria," Kuneva stressed.
The name of the ex Commissioner has been circulating in public space for a while now as a very likely presidential candidate. Her party – the National Movement for Stability and Prosperity (NMSP) of former Tsar and Prime Minister, Simeon Saxe-Coburg, is firmly behind her. They say they hope to have her decision by April 20, when the party is holding a meeting of its political council to discuss the upcoming elections.
One day earlier, the main opposition formation, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, split regarding declaring official support for Kuneva. The proposal, believed to have been enthusiastically embraced and promoted by leader and former Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev, has been vehemently opposed by the more conservative members of the party, who say voters do not associate her with left-wing ideas.
According to the poll's results, Kuneva will lose the presidential race against Borisov, but would win against Pleveneliev or Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov.
