An intriguing philosophical debate took place in the Bulgarian Parliament Wednesday between Parliamentary speaker Tsetska Tsacheva and socialist MP Lyuben Kornezov.

Kornezov accused his colleagues from the country's National Assembly of hypocrisy, as they were voting on banning animal fights.

"I guess we are ready with human welfare and can move on to dogs and other spinal creatures," the MP ironically commented, rhetorically asking why fights between people or between people and animals are not banned.

"What if France drops its rooster fights, which are a national symbol?" Kornezov asked.

"Roosters are not spinal creatures," Parliamentary speaker Tsetska Tsacheva argued, only to be corrected by the MP.

Tsacheva is among the names mentioned as the ruling centrist-right GERB's potential Presidential candidate.

Any Bulgarian citizen who organizes or participates in animal fighting will face up to 5 years behind bars and a fine ranging between BGN 5 000 and BGN 10 000. The new and tougher sanctions were included in the amendments to the country's Penal Code, which were accepted by the Parliament.
