The ruling, center-right Citizens of European Development of Bulgaria, GERB, party is going to announce their nominations for president and vice president in July.
The information was reported by the GERB Member of the Parliament and Chair of the Legal Parliamentary Committee, Iskra Fidosova, who spoke Monday in an interview for the Bulgarian National Television, BNT.
Fidosova further announced GERB is mulling three names as their potential candidate to run for president in the fall, but refused to reveal these names or any other details on the grounds consultations are ongoing.
The names that have circulated in public space so far are the ones of the GERB Speaker of the Parliament, Tsetska Tsacheva, and of Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov. Tsvetanov used to be the personal choice of Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, but this was before the Interior Head was tangled in several scandals involving his apartments in Sofia and reading text recorded with special surveillance devices, SRS, in the Parliament.
Fidosova declared mid-summer won't be too late of a time to announce the candidates, saying it is ridiculous to make comparisons with the US, where President, Barack Obama, already announced his intentions to run for a second term in office in 2012 because American political traditions were "very different."
The GERB MP further said the decision of the main opposition force, the Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, to reveal the names of their nominations only after GERB does so, is flimsy because it does not boil down to a true political decision.
