Bulgaria's Elections - Rise of the Undead?

Bulgaria's electoral rolls have turned out to be quite "spooky" as a considerable number of dead souls threaten to haunt them ahead of the upcoming local and presidential elections in the country.

Some 1 million phantoms may "vote" in the elections scheduled for the fall of 2011, according to Mihail Konstantinov, head of the Central Election Commission, as cited by the Dnevnik daily. The country's Citizens Registration and Administrative Services, on the basis of which the electoral rolls are prepared, is not obliged to stay in touch with the latest census data.

Bulgaria's political formations have always had ingenious methods to boost their vote count – telling people what they want to hear, feeding them meatballs, bribing them. As the Bulgarian society is becoming more and more disillusioned and apathetic, it would not be far- fetched to suggest that some parties will not hesitate to summon the army of the dead. Laws and rules are considered somewhat arbitrary in Bulgaria.

As for the living voters – if a nation is unable to decide its own fate, there is always someone else to do that.
