Two young Bulgarians died overnight after taking part in an illegal motorbike race on the beltway of the capital Sofia.

The news was reported Friday morning by the TV channel bTV.

The victims have only been identified as man and a woman, both 25, according to bTV, while the Interior Ministry lists them as 35 and 34. They died after their bike hit the crash barrier.

Several bikers have been testing their engines just a kilometer away from the location of the accident. The spot is known for being the place for illegal drag racing, but the police say they cannot do anything to stop them.

Upon police arrival on the scene, one of the participants in the race managed to escape; three others did not have permits to operate motorbikes.

Mayor of Sofia, Yordanka Fandakova, told bTV she was going to talk once again with the Interior Ministry, Traffic Police, and Sofia Police Directorate leaderships to insist they must solve the problem with illegal races in the capital.
