Bulgarian President's Care of Wolf Declared Legal

The she-wolf raised by Bulgaria's President, Georgi Parvanov, in the "Kalina" villa in Sofia's Boyana suburb, does not have to be registered with the Regional Directorate for Environment and Waters (RIOSV).

The information was reported by the Sofia RIOSV press center Thursday, saying the animal is State property and is being raised in a park, also a State property.

Several weeks ago, Parvanov wrote on his Facebook page that he is taking care of the 2-year old she-wolf in the State Boyana residence, bragging "no human in history had been able to domesticate a wolf while I am raising one together with a sheepdog of the Bulgarian Karakachan breed."

After media inquiries if this is legal or not, the President invited in his home RIOSV experts. The Protection of Animal Act requires everyone who is raising wild animals to register them within a 14-day deadline.

The experts found out the she-wolf is domesticated and lives free in the park around the villa while according to a document, dated September 11, 2009, the wolf is owned by the Vitinya State Hunting Estate, and was given to the park for temporary raise.
