Multi-Million Electricity Bills Stress Out Bulgarians

A total of 98 citizens living in the Bulgarian city of Varna were shocked by incorrect electricity bills worth more than BGN 19 M (around USD 14 M).

On Wednesday, the first "victim" of the error became publicly known, as he "owned" a little over BGN 19 M for used electricity. As his son-in-law estimated, this sum equals his household's average electricity consumption for some 19 000 years. Later the same day, nearly 100 "millionaires" followed.

The E.ON electricity company clarified that the problem has been caused by a human error and that the employee in question will be punished accordingly. The actual bills the citizens had to pay were mistakenly formatted as dates, the company explained before the btv private channel, begging to be forgiven.

However, the distressed Bulgarians haave declared they will make a civil claim as a result of the inflicted stress.
