Bulgarian Finance Minister and Deputy PM has started his US visit with a meeting with members of the Bulgarian community in San Diego, California.

Over 2 000 Bulgarians live in San Diego, according to the report of the Finance Ministry press service.

Djankov is the first Bulgarian government member to ever visit the Bulgarian diaspora in San Diego.

The major topics of his meeting with the Bulgarian immigrants in the Californian city focused on Bulgarian education and culture in the USA, Bulgaria's long-awaited inclusion in the US visa waiver program, the consular services for Bulgarians in the USA, the economic and demographic situation in Bulgaria.

San Diego has a Bulgarian school attended once a week by children in three age groups. The school was set up in 2007 by the Vasil Levski Foundation for Education and Culture.

The school has been approved through a program of the Bulgarian government, which will see some 140 Bulgarian schools abroad as applicants in 2011, according to Djankov.
